Ignite Portland burns on Thursday, October 25, 2007!

We have a confirmed date and venue! Ignite Portland will happen on Thursday, October 25, 2007, at Wieden & Kennedy (224 NW 13th Ave, Portland, OR). Exact time TBD, but it will be in the evening, around 6PM to 9PM. The WK space is AMAZING - many thanks to Renny Gleeson and everyone at Wieden & Kennedy for being willing to host us.

Ignite Portland is free to attend and/or present. If you want to attend, please RSVP here at Upcoming, so we know how many to expect. If you’d like to be a presenter (20 slides, 15 seconds each), jot your name and idea down on the Presenters page. We’ll work with you to get your presentation in the correct format and turned in before the event, so we can run them all rapid-fire, back to back.

We want to have yummy food and drinks, but we need sponsors to pay for it, so if you’re interested in helping out, check out the Sponsorships page and let us know what you can do.

Now that we have these details nailed down, we’re going to work fast an furious on getting the rest of the event planned out - presenter list, sponsors, etc. You’ll want to subscribe to the feed to keep up to date, and if you want to help out, let us know by posting a comment.

I’m so excited - this is going to be awesome! :-)

Watch the video of Ignite Seattle at Gnomedex 2007

Want to see the video of what sparked the idea of doing Ignite Portland in my mind? It was the session at Gnomedex 2007 where Brady Forest and the rest of the Ignite Seattle crew presented, rapid fire. I was hooked. Watch the video below, or download a higher quality MPEG4 version at this link:

When is this thing going to happen, anyway?

There’s been some consternation in the comments that we haven’t announced a date for the first Ignite Portland yet. We’re not trying to be coy. We’re just waiting on confirmation from our venue. Until we get that, the whole thing is subject to change.

That said, the TENTATIVE date we’re looking at is Thursday, October 25, 2007, 6-9 PM. We haven’t found any major event conflicts in the Portland area (at least, not according to Upcoming or Facebook). If you know of a reason this date is a bad idea, please let us know sooner rather than later.

We’re actively looking for sponsors for things like food, drinks, signage, etc. If you’re interested being a sponsor, check out the Sponsorships page, and get in touch with us. Even a couple hundred bucks would go a long way. Thanks! :-)

Call for Burning Ideas - want to present at Ignite Portland?

If you’ve got a burning idea that you want to share with 20-slides-for-15-seconds-each at Ignite Portland, we now have a place for you to speak up and let us know you’re interested.

Go to the Want to Present? page, read, and leave a comment to let us know what you’d like to present about.

We’re using that page as a way to gauge interest and participation. We’re not saying you can’t present if you don’t post there, but we’d like it if you let us know, so we can plan beter.

As always, post a comment or drop me an email (jabancroft@gmail.com) if you have any questions! :-)

Ignite Portland Constitution

These are meant to be the  criteria, values, and guidelines that Ignite Portland will follow. Without them, the “core things we care about”, it could and will likely become just another tech conference/event. Let’s make it something unique, or we may as well not do it. Of course, these are subject to debate and change - what you’re about to read right now is my take on this, as of today.

Open and Community Based

Anyone who wants to can participate. No cost to present or attend. As long as you have something interesting, and stick to the format (20 slides for 15 seconds each), you’re good. if you don’t like something about the way Ignite works, and want to change it, let us know. We’ll listen to you. But we’re not going to accommodate every request to change the way Ignite Portland works. Very sorry. If that’s not OK with you, you should probably find another event to attend or present at. We’re not the perfect match for everyone.

Interesting Über Alles

When and if it becomes necessary to pick and choose who gets to present, we want to judge ideas and presentations on how interesting they are, and not much else. That is, we want to avoid any other subjective criteria, like how well an idea fits with the “theme” or “feel” of the event, or of Portland itself. Putting up subjective barriers, even if couched in a positive way (like trying to “focus” the presentations) is a surefire way to kill this event. We, the organizers, are not smart enough to know what will end up being interesting and valuable to people who attend, and what will not. We cannot read people’s minds, and cannot see the future. So we won’t try. If your idea fits the format, and is interesting to at least one person (e.g., you), you’re in. If we get more people who want to present than we can handle, well, we’ll figure out a fair way to deal with that problem.

No Keynotes

This isn’t your father’s tech event. All presentations will be given equal standing/billing. Let them differentiate themselves on their own merit and interestingness. We don’t want to have “featured” presenters, keynotes, or special slots for presenters. Is there someone/some company that you really want to see present at Ignite Portland? Great! Get them to present. Nothing in your way. But we don’t hold special spots.

Sponsors

Since we’re not charging money to presenters or attendees, we need sponsors to pay for or otherwise provide the necessities of the event. Like a place to have it. Extras, like food, drinks, badges, and schwag are totally fine, if someone wants to sponsor them. If you sponsor something (and we can certainly find something you can sponsor, if you’re interested, no matter what your budget!), we’ll happily thank you for it - no “anti-commercialism” here - we love sponsors! And that leads us to…

Bias/Pitches/Spam

We want Ignite to be about promoting and sharing burning ideas. If those ideas happen to take the form of the company you work for, the startup you’re trying to get funded, or any other self-serving commercial interest, then so be it. We’re fine with it, really. But whatever you present had better be interesting, because that’s what it’s going to be judged on in people’s minds. if you’re going to market to people at Ignite Portland, you’d better be smart about it. Because if you’re not, it’s likely to blow up in your face, and end up making people hate you. Don’t say we never warned you.

The Rest of the Rules

I guess there have to be some “real” rules in here, somewhere. So, here they are. Don’t do anything that’s going to get you or us in trouble. Nothing blatantly illegal (I’m not talking about “how to rip a DVD”, I’m talking about “how to make meth in your kitchen” or “how to make a car bomb”). In short, I guess the only “real” rule is “Don’t Be Stupid”. That seems to cover pretty much everything, doesn’t it? ;-)

Ignite Portland to replace DemoCamp Portland

I’m excited about the forthcoming Ignite Portland event series! We’re working on a date and venue right now. Once these issues are finalized, the planning process will move quickly. Expect the first Ignite Portland in 2007.

Many of you have been waiting for a firm date on DemoCamp Portland 2. The original intention was to host a quarterly DemoCamp, to facilitate networking and exposure to cool ideas, while keeping the BarCamp spirit alive.

For a number of reasons, we’re going to retire DemoCamp Portland and fold it into the Ignite Portland effort. There are similarities between the two events, and the no slides approach for DemoCamp limited some presentation ideas. Ignite Portland appeals to a larger audience. BarCamp is going to be an annual event in Portland - stay tuned for more details in early 2008. We may do a series of demos at the 2008 BarCamp, but not likely as ‘DemoCamp.’ Ignite Portland will probably be a quarterly event, but this may change, based on popularity.

I have updated the DemoCamp Portland pages to point to this site. Once we have a date and venue for Ignite Portland, we will post the information here and promote it actively.

More soon…

Inspiration and Background

Just a little background reading/information, that will help give a flavor for what Ignite Portland is all about. Think: Olympic-style Powerpoint. :-)

  • Ignite Seattle - I first heard the idea of “Ignite”-style presentations leading up to Gnomedex 2007. O’Reilly’s Brady Forrest and the crew from Ignite Seattle kicked butt at Gnomedex with their energy and style, and piqued my interest in the format. Here’s a great blog post by Britt Reybould with links to the Ignite presentations. There’s also Ignite Boston.
  • Pecha Kucha - 20 slides/images, 20 seconds each, for a strict 6 minute 40 second presentation. Condense your message and energy down into that small space, then let it out in a poetry jam-style fast paced evening. First started by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham. Pecha kucha (pronounced peh-chak-cha) comes from the Japanese for the sound of conversation/chit-chat.
  • Lightning Talks - I was first introduced to the concept of Lightning Talks at OSCON 2006, when Danese Cooper and Dawn Foster asked me to give one (strict 5 minute limit) on “The Art of Community”. Several others gave lightning talks on similar topics during the hour long session. It was fun!

This should give you a taste of what we’re thinking more details to come as we think them up, and of course, we’re open to your input. There are so many cool groups, conferences, meetups, organizations, and gangs in Portland that we think it would be awesome to have a night once every few months where we can all get together and share all of those ideas that are burning inside us - technology, art, communications, or whatever the topic.

We’re aiming to kick this thing off around the end of October, so keep an eye on this site (subscribe to the feed!), and get ready to mark your calendar. It will be free to attend, and free to participate. We’ll probably need sponsors for stuff like food, but we haven’t gotten that far in our planning yet. If you’d like to volunteer, leave a comment, or email me at jabancroft@gmail.com.

We’re about to Ignite Portland! :-)

Light it up

Welcome to Ignite Portland. Share Burning Ideas. More coming soon - this is going to be fun! :-)
