Tell us your thoughts about IP3

Thank you to everyone who attended Ignite Portland 3! Last night the speakers had their turn to talk, now we want to hear from you. What did you think about the event? What did you like and what can we improve on?

We made lots of changes this time based on your feedback from Ignite Portland 2. Everyone wanted shorter lines and more bartenders. Some wanted more technology topics, some wanted fewer. We want to keep the things you like and improve what needs improving. Your thoughts and ideas helps us create a better event, so please tell us what you thought of Ignite Portland 3.

Important Info for Ignite Portland Tonight

We are really excited about Ignite Portland and can hardly believe that the day has finally arrived!!

A few things to keep in mind for tonight

  • If you have a ticket, it is only good from 5:30 - 6:15pm
  • Arrive early (even if you have a ticket). Seating is limited
  • The name on your ID must match your ticket (tickets are not transferable)
  • We will start general admission at 6:15
  • Parking is scarce to non-existent near Hawthorne. We highly recommend taking public transportation!
  • Leave the valuables, big backpacks, etc. at home. We’ll be packed in like sardines, and we are not responsible for lost or stolen items.
  • Feel free to bring a camera to take pictures or video
  • For information on tagging, twitter and other electronic updates, please see Josh’s post on How to Participate Electronically.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What time should I arrive? The earlier you arrive, the better your chances of getting a good seat. We are suggesting that people arrive no later than 5pm if you want a good seat.

Can I get in without a ticket? Yes. You can wait in the general admission line to be admitted without a ticket at 6:15pm.

I have a friend on the organizing committee, can you get me a special ticket? No. Parents of organizers have been denied this request. Do you think we love you more than our parents? Um, maybe, but probably not.

If I RSVP’d on Upcoming.org does that mean I already have a ticket? No.

What if I lose my ticket? You can retrieve it online here.

What if I leave my ticket or ID at home? You will have our profound sympathy and be directed to the general admission line.

Will food and drinks be available? Yes. The Bagdad will have their normal menu available.

Can kids come? What if my kids don’t have an email address? Kids are welcome but all minors need to be out of the building by 9:00pm per OLCC rules (the event ends at 9:00 so they won’t miss any of the presentations).Children without tickets will be admitted with ticketed adults.

Ignite Portland 3 is Tonight! How to Participate Electronically

Ignite Portland 3 is tonight! 450 of you have early entry tickets (bring your ID - tickets are non-transferrable, to prevent cheating), to get in when the doors open at 5:30 PM. At 6:15, we go “general admission” - even if you have a ticket. So even if you don’t have a ticket, come down early, get in the GA line, and you’ll likely get in.

If you can’t make it in person to the Bagdad tonight, or if you’re just the kind of geek that wants to fully experience the augmented digital reality that surrounds an event like this, here’s your guide on how to follow the part of Ignite Portland that’s taking place online:

  1. This blog - www.igniteportland.com. Make sure to subscribe to the feed. We won’t be posting minute-by-munte stuff here, but this is where you’ll find out when the videos, slides, and news on the next Ignite Portland become available. You can even subscribe by email, if you’re old school like that.
  2. Follow @igniteportland on Twitter. This is where the up-to-the-minute updates will be coming from. Stuff like how long the lines are (hopefully short!), links to any live streams that happen, or any other last minute news or updates. Wifi coverage may be spotty, so you might want to set Twitter up to deliver these updates via text message to your cell phone (there won’t be TOO many - maybe a dozen or two over the course of the evening). If you’re attending, and have something you think everyone should know, send a “D” message to this account, and we’ll get the word out.
  3. Use this Summize search to see what people on Twitter are saying about Ignite Portland 3. It’s much easier than trying to track down and follow all of the people involved - that query will show you what people are saying about IP3, regardless of whether you follow them. The buzz is already building! There’s a feed you can subscribe to, if you prefer to get it that way, and Summize looks and works great on your iPhone, Blackberry, or other mobile device.
  4. Join us in the Ignite Portland FriendFeed Room. If you’re a FriendFeed person, come join us there to share and discuss related to the event. This is kind of an experiment, but it could be really, really cool. Come show us how to make it awesome!
  5. If you’re making media (photos, videos, whatever) at Ignite (and we definitely encourage you do to so!), please tag it “igniteportland” on Flickr, YouTube, or wherever you share it, so that other people can find it. If you have something really, really cool to share (like you got a video of Todd doing something embarrassing ;-) ), let us know, and we’ll see about posting it here.

If last time is any indication, 700+ geeks in one place will probably overwhelm the wifi at the Bagdad Theater, so plan on using your cellular connectivity (in fact, last time, I think we overwhelmed the local cell towers with data traffic, so there’s no guarantee it won’t be a connectivity black hole!). Plan accordingly. But it doesn’t matter - come to have fun, geek out, meet cool people, and come hang out with us at the afterparty.

Let’s light this thing! :-)

Announcing Ignite 3 Presentations

I’m very pleased to announce our final selections for Ignite Portland 3. A total of 51 talks were submitted, all from smart, passionate people.  We had to whittle them down to 13, trying to keep a balance of topics and people. I’m so excited to see every one of these presentations, and can’t wait for you all to be there with me!

And here they are:

5:30 Doors Open
6:00 Registration & Networking
7:00 Presentations Wave 1

7:45 Break and Networking
8:10 Door Prizes
8:15 Presentations Wave 2

8:50 Networking
9:30 Go Home! (or adjourn to the bar for further networking)

* Minors are required to leave at 9:00 due to OLCC regulations

What a line-up! Cheap cars and facing your fears? Eggs and running startups? Robots, Manga, and riding freight trains?  This is why I love Portland.

Be sure to RSVP on Upcoming if you’ll be attending. Even though we ran out of tickets online (in less than 24-hours!) we have saved space for general admission without a ticket starting at 6:15pm.  Doors open at 5:30pm for ticketholders!
