I found that I kept getting the same error (regardless of the email checkbox) until I disabled mine. Also, I don't know if this is just me or a larger issue, but I found that signing up with an email address that goes through Google Apps for Domains never delivered a confirmation (in the inbox or in the spambox), but signing up through my @gmail.com address worked fine.
