Guess Who Will Be Giving Our ‘What Is Ignite’ Talk?

Seriously, you have to guess.

At every Ignite Portland, our first talk is used to explain the Ignite format along with providing some logistical information that you will want to know. This time, we have recruited a special guest.

Here are the clues:

  • He is an east coaster.
  • He currently lives on the west coast, but not in Portland.
  • He has jumped out of a plane.
  • He infuses vodkas, and his fave is candied ginger. Yum for sakitinis!
  • He was in the Boy Scouts.
  • He goes to BurningMan most years, and he built a car from scratch in 2004.  This year he will be building a generative music & laser installation.

Leave your best guess in the comments.

Ignite Portland wants to give you ‘15 Seconds of Flame’!

Do you have something to share with Portland? Can you share it in 15 seconds? If so, here’s your chance to get your 15 Seconds of Flame! Send us a video of yourself sharing your “Flame”, and if it’s selected we’ll show it during Ignite Portland 5 on February 19th.

The format is kinda like the talks, but shorter and with video:

What can I share? Anything! Share an idea, a skill, a poem, or something you’re passionate about. Silly or serious- it’s up to you. Tell us your plan to save the world or why you love living in Portland, do shadow puppets, sing a really short song, bust a dance move or show Portland that you really can tie a cherry stem with your tongue. Be creative and be interesting.

What format? Video. (see below for technical details)

What can’t I share? Nothing gross or “spammy” (promotional). We also tend to shy away from politics, religion and high pitched squealy noises.

Will submitting a Flame help or hinder the chances of my talk being selected? It will have no effect.

Will I go up on stage to share my “15 Seconds of Flame”? Nope. We’ll just show what you send us.

Can it be a little longer than 15 seconds? No. Just like the slides in the Ignite talks, after 15 seconds the train keeps a-rollin’ on. Videos longer than 15 seconds may be edited down or rejected altogether.

If I send my Flame, will you show it for sure? We’ll select some of the best to play at Ignite. No guarantees.

If my Flame is selected will I be notified? Will I get guaranteed tickets to the event? Will my friends think I’m cool? Will I be paid? No, no, yes and no.

When are submissions due? By February 6th, 2009 @ 11:59pm.

How do I submit my video? To make your submission you’ll need to upload it somewhere and email a link to IgnitePDX@gmail.com. If you’re not sure how, we suggest using http://blip.tv . It’s free and allows us to download the original file (keep in mind video sharing sites like Blip can take hours or days to post your video- make sure to upload far enough in advance that you don’t miss the deadline). Make sure to tag it “Legion of Tech”, “Ignite Portland” and “15 Seconds of Flame”

Technical Stuff:

We can handle most common video formats (AVI, .MPEG, .MOV etc). We ask that you give us the highest quality you can and in full dimension so it looks good (We’ll be projecting on a huge theater screen). If you’re not a video expert don’t worry about the format specs, just send us something that will look good. But here is our suggested format if you have the option:

Quicktime H.264
Full Dimensions - 720×480 NTSC SD or 1280×720 HD or 1920×1080 HD
30 (29.97) FPS
Use a High VBR.

Only send content for which you have appropriate rights and permissions. We reserve the right to post your video for others to view and share under Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 United States License.

What did *you* think of Ignite Portland

We had a fantastic time at the event. Some things worked really well, like the awesome presentations. Other things could have been better, like a faster-moving line for drinks.

Let us know in the comments: What did you think of Ignite Portland?

  • What was awesome? (we’ll try to keep these the same)
  • What could we do better?

Here come the videos…

The first batch of videos from Ignite Portland 2 are starting to appear online, thanks to our friend A.J. (aka Linuxaid). A.J. did an amazing job shooting video for the first Ignite Portland in October 2007, and he’s at it again for Ignite Portland 2, less than 24 hours after the completion of the event. As he will be posting them throughout the day, you can look for the most recent videos directly from Linuxaid’s YouTube profile page. We will update this blog entry with links to the individual videos are they come in…

That’s all of the videos! HUGE thanks and props to A.J. (a.k.a. linuxaid) for getting these up and available so fast! Less than 24 hours, just like last time. This guy is a superstar! :-)

If you didn’t get a chance to register at the event…

…then please do so online now. This will help us plan for future events.

The online registration form.

I’m am far too tired to do a recap post tonight (and I’m guessing Josh will do that on Wednesday). The event was a huge success and I am so proud to live in a place like Portland where these types of events are possible.

What a cool place we live in!

PS: We’ll get video and the slides posted in the next 24-48 hours.

Ignite Portland on the Radio

Tomorrow is the big day! With Upcoming RSVPs well over 500 now, we’re hoping to fill every seat in the house at the Bagdad Theater. As a reminder, you do not have to RSVP using Upcoming to attend. We’ll have seats for 580, and standing room for a few hundred, so while we think it’s going to be a packed house tomorrow (at least the seats), we don’t expect that we’re going to have to turn away anyone due to fire code limits this time. We know from a few people that the fire code issue at the last event actually kept a few people away. Come one, come all!

Ignite Portland is going to be included in the Rick Emerson Show on AM 970 (”Solid State Radio”) today sometime in the 2-3pm hour. If you want to listen in live over the Internet, or listen to a recording later on, both the live stream and the recorded shows are available from the AM 970 website. You can, of course, just tune into 970 AM during the 2-3pm hour, as well. I will be interviewed by Rick Emerson and provide some background on Ignite Portland 2 and what people can expect. We appreciate the opportunity from AM 970 to get the word out. Twitter and Upcoming have been great avenues to market the event, but getting coverage in The Oregonian and AM 970 will help us reach those people not actively participating in the Portland online community.

Update: Here’s the audio of the show. Listen to his Raven and Rick Emerson discussing the Ignite format, highlights of the presentations we’re going to see at Ignite Portland 2, and how cool Portland is in general! Click to listen in the embedded player below, or click here to download the MP3 file directly (2.5MB, about 5.5 minutes).

Welcome, Oregonians!

The Oregonian this morning has an article about Ignite Portland 2 on the cover of the Living (C) section. Laura Oppenheimer is the author. There is also an online version of the article, posted at OregonLive.com - “What’s on your mind? You’ve got five minutes …,” although you will see from the photo that Scott Kveton took above, the print version is worth the trip to the store to buy a copy for $0.50. There are a few people whose names were not mentioned in The Oregonian article who have been a big help with Ignite Portland planning - Scott Kveton, Adam Duvander, Aaron Hockley, Ann Marcus, the rest of the board of Legion of Tech, Renny Gleeson, and a whole host of volunteers who help from crowd control to cleanup and everything else that needs to be done to make Ignite Portland operate smoothly. Thank you!

If you’re just finding out about Ignite Portland 2 from the article in The Oregonian - WELCOME! The event is open to all. Here’s some quick information about the event - we hope to see you there!

* Ignite Portland 2 takes place Tuesday, February 5th, from 6-9pm at the Bagdad Theatrer on 3702 S.E. Hawthorne Blvd. We have posted directions to the venue.

* Doors open at 5:15pm and admission is always FREE. We are recommending that you get there early as there is always a possibility that we hit the fire code limit again this time. For the first Ignite Portland event, we hit fire code at 297 people over at the beautiful Wieden+Kennedy space in NE Portland. We had to move the venue this time to accommodate more people. The Bagdad will hold 580 sitting, and I think we can get around 700 total people in there.

* We are hoping to get an attendance count prior to the night of the event for planning purposes. If you have a few minutes, it would help us if you’d visit our page on Upcoming, and add yourself to the RSVP list. You do not have to RSVP to attend, but this process helps us in terms of event planning and logistics.

* Make sure you take a look at the agenda for the event. For Ignite Portland 2, we’ll have 14 speakers and an intro on ‘What is Ignite?’ for the newcomers. You can also check out videos from the first event to get a sense for how this all works.

* Ignite Portland will continue on a regular basis. We’ve already begun work on Ignite Portland 3, and will share details on the third event the night of February 5th at Ignite Portland 2.

* If you’re inspired to submit a presentation idea for the next Ignite Portland, please be patient for a few more weeks until we get the submission form back online for the next event. We look forward to your submission!

* This event is supported by our wonderful sponsors - you can check out the list on the right sidebar of this site. Thank you, sponsors!

We look forward to seeing you at Ignite Portland 2!

Ignite Portland 2 Coming on Feb. 5!

The Details:
Tuesday, February 5th
Time: 6:00 - 9:00pm
Bagdad Theater 3702 S.E. Hawthorne Blvd. Portland, OR 97214
Admission is always FREE
RSVP on Upcoming

We Love Our Sponsors!
They buy us food and drinks (along with the boring stuff like event insurance and AV costs)! We had ~300 people at the last event, and we hope to have more at this one. Ignite Portland is only as good as our sponsors - our ability to provide food, beverages, etc. is only possible because of the generous sponsorships of local companies! If you are interested in sponsoring, contact Todd Kenefsky (kenefsky at gmail).

We Need Presenters!
We will have the presentation idea submission form up soon, but for now, start thinking about an awesome presentation that will wow the audience in 5 minutes with 20 slides that auto advance every 15 seconds!

Volunteers!
These events would not be possible without a group of loyal volunteers to help staff the registration desk, run the presentations, and make the event run smoothly! Josh Bancroft is our fearless leader for this event, so contact him (jabancroft at gmail) if you are interested in volunteering at this or other Legion of Tech events.

Ignite Portland (the original)
If you missed the last event, take a look at the videos and presentations on the Ignite Portland site. After seeing them, you WILL want to attend this event!

Ignite Portland Presentations Online

The presentations from our first Ignite Portland event are finally available online and can be found on the Agenda & Presentations page.  Enjoy!

Submit Your Presentation Ideas for Ignite by 10/16!

Want to present at Ignite Portland on 10/25?

All you have to do is pack an idea/pitch into our format - 20 slides, shown for 15 seconds each, auto-advanced, and make your idea sound more exciting than the others!

We’ve had a great response to our call for presenters.  So much so that we have more ideas than presentation slots; however, keep them coming! We’ll just have to pick the best ones.  Keep in mind that we expect these to be regular events, so if you do not get to present at this one, you will have other opportunities.

You can submit your idea and view the timeline, presentation format, rough agenda, and more on the presentation page.

We’re looking forward to your burning ideas - we know that there are more smart, unique, amazing people with burning ideas in Portland than anywhere else in the world - that’s why we’re doing Ignite Portland. So get submitting!
