Tickets Available Tomorrow - Don’t Miss Out!

Just a quick, last minute reminder that Ignite Portland tickets will be available at 10AM PST on Thursday, February 5, 2009. That’s tomorrow, so don’t miss out!

As we mentioned in our previous announcement:

When the time comes, details will be posted here at http://www.igniteportland.com. Make sure you’re subscribed to the feed, and follow @igniteportland on Twitter.

Mark your calendars, set a reminder on your iPhone, or do whatever you feel like you need to do to get a ticket if you’re interested. We’re also going to try a few tweaks to the process to make it easier to get on a “waitlist”, if there are no tickets available when you come.

A ton of effort goes on behind the scenes on the part of Igal Koshevoy and his crew of happy coders for our proposal and ticketing systems, and we owe them a huge thanks for helping us manage an event of this magnitude.

Judging by the buzz on Twitter and posts on Silicon Florist and other sites, people are starting to get excited! :)

Portland Ignites Gnomedex

Ignite Portland is breaking out of Oregon (for a short time)! :-)

Chris and Ponzi Pirillo, and the other organizers of the best geek conference I’ve ever been to, Gnomedex, pinged me last week to see if any Ignite Portland alumni would be interested in giving their talks at Gnomedex 8.0 this year.

As a result, at Gnomedex on Saturday morning, there’s going to be a “mini-Ignite Portland” with selections of popular talks from past Ignite Portland events. (This isn’t an official Legion of Tech event.) There’s also going to be a similar “mini Ignite Seattle” on Friday afternoon, with Brady Forest and his cadre of Igniters.

Rick Turoczy over at Silicon Florist has a writeup, with a list of the talks that will be featured, and you can see the “speaker bio” page for the talks on the Gnomedex site.

Here are the talks that are migrating north to Seattle:

The coolest thing about all of this? The idea for Ignite Portland was hatched at last year’s Gnomedex. They highlighted some of the previous evening’s Ignite Seattle talks, and I loved them. The energy and excitement were off the charts, and I immediately started thinking (and Twitter-ing) about how awesome it would be to do an Ignite event in Portland. Connections and plans were made, venues were filled to capacity, Legion of Tech was born, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Besides the obvious coolness of these talks, there’s something poetic about Ignite Portland making an appearance at Gnomedex. It goes to show that a lot of really cool things can happen in the space of one year! :-)

Important Info for Ignite Portland Tonight

We are really excited about Ignite Portland and can hardly believe that the day has finally arrived!!

A few things to keep in mind for tonight

  • If you have a ticket, it is only good from 5:30 - 6:15pm
  • Arrive early (even if you have a ticket). Seating is limited
  • The name on your ID must match your ticket (tickets are not transferable)
  • We will start general admission at 6:15
  • Parking is scarce to non-existent near Hawthorne. We highly recommend taking public transportation!
  • Leave the valuables, big backpacks, etc. at home. We’ll be packed in like sardines, and we are not responsible for lost or stolen items.
  • Feel free to bring a camera to take pictures or video
  • For information on tagging, twitter and other electronic updates, please see Josh’s post on How to Participate Electronically.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What time should I arrive? The earlier you arrive, the better your chances of getting a good seat. We are suggesting that people arrive no later than 5pm if you want a good seat.

Can I get in without a ticket? Yes. You can wait in the general admission line to be admitted without a ticket at 6:15pm.

I have a friend on the organizing committee, can you get me a special ticket? No. Parents of organizers have been denied this request. Do you think we love you more than our parents? Um, maybe, but probably not.

If I RSVP’d on Upcoming.org does that mean I already have a ticket? No.

What if I lose my ticket? You can retrieve it online here.

What if I leave my ticket or ID at home? You will have our profound sympathy and be directed to the general admission line.

Will food and drinks be available? Yes. The Bagdad will have their normal menu available.

Can kids come? What if my kids don’t have an email address? Kids are welcome but all minors need to be out of the building by 9:00pm per OLCC rules (the event ends at 9:00 so they won’t miss any of the presentations).Children without tickets will be admitted with ticketed adults.

Announcing Ignite 3 Presentations

I’m very pleased to announce our final selections for Ignite Portland 3. A total of 51 talks were submitted, all from smart, passionate people.  We had to whittle them down to 13, trying to keep a balance of topics and people. I’m so excited to see every one of these presentations, and can’t wait for you all to be there with me!

And here they are:

5:30 Doors Open
6:00 Registration & Networking
7:00 Presentations Wave 1

7:45 Break and Networking
8:10 Door Prizes
8:15 Presentations Wave 2

8:50 Networking
9:30 Go Home! (or adjourn to the bar for further networking)

* Minors are required to leave at 9:00 due to OLCC regulations

What a line-up! Cheap cars and facing your fears? Eggs and running startups? Robots, Manga, and riding freight trains?  This is why I love Portland.

Be sure to RSVP on Upcoming if you’ll be attending. Even though we ran out of tickets online (in less than 24-hours!) we have saved space for general admission without a ticket starting at 6:15pm.  Doors open at 5:30pm for ticketholders!

Today’s your last chance to submit Ignite Portland 3 presentation ideas

Holy cow! Ignite Portland 3 is sneaking up on us, fast! The event will be held on June 18, at the Bagdad Theater in Portland (same place it was last time - RSVP at Upcoming). Know what that means? It means that today, May 28, is the last day we’re accepting presentation idea submissions. Cutoff is midnight (PDT).

If you’ve taken part in Ignite Portland before, you know that the mix of 5 minute, 20 slide presentations is all over the map - pepper to rockets, Dr. Seuss to David Hasselhoff. That’s what makes it so awesome! But we are totally, 100% dependent on YOU for all of those cool ideas and presentations (I sound like a public radio fund drive, don’t I? ;-) ).

We had a shorter submission window this time, and I think we’ve gotten a lower number of ideas submitted (I’d have to check on that). Know what that means? It means the chances of YOUR idea getting selected to present is HIGHER THAN EVER.

So head on over to the submission page before midnight, give us a summary of who you are and what your presentation idea is, and help us to make Ignite Portland 3 even MORE awesome than the last two! We’ve got a reputation to uphold here, people, and we’re counting on you.

Don’t let the Portland geeky crafty bacon-y crowd down! ;-)

Here come the videos…

The first batch of videos from Ignite Portland 2 are starting to appear online, thanks to our friend A.J. (aka Linuxaid). A.J. did an amazing job shooting video for the first Ignite Portland in October 2007, and he’s at it again for Ignite Portland 2, less than 24 hours after the completion of the event. As he will be posting them throughout the day, you can look for the most recent videos directly from Linuxaid’s YouTube profile page. We will update this blog entry with links to the individual videos are they come in…

If you didn’t get a chance to register at the event…

…then please do so online now. This will help us plan for future events.

The online registration form.

I’m am far too tired to do a recap post tonight (and I’m guessing Josh will do that on Wednesday). The event was a huge success and I am so proud to live in a place like Portland where these types of events are possible.

What a cool place we live in!

PS: We’ll get video and the slides posted in the next 24-48 hours.

Ignite Portland on the Radio

Tomorrow is the big day! With Upcoming RSVPs well over 500 now, we’re hoping to fill every seat in the house at the Bagdad Theater. As a reminder, you do not have to RSVP using Upcoming to attend. We’ll have seats for 580, and standing room for a few hundred, so while we think it’s going to be a packed house tomorrow (at least the seats), we don’t expect that we’re going to have to turn away anyone due to fire code limits this time. We know from a few people that the fire code issue at the last event actually kept a few people away. Come one, come all!

Ignite Portland is going to be included in the Rick Emerson Show on AM 970 (”Solid State Radio”) today sometime in the 2-3pm hour. If you want to listen in live over the Internet, or listen to a recording later on, both the live stream and the recorded shows are available from the AM 970 website. You can, of course, just tune into 970 AM during the 2-3pm hour, as well. I will be interviewed by Rick Emerson and provide some background on Ignite Portland 2 and what people can expect. We appreciate the opportunity from AM 970 to get the word out. Twitter and Upcoming have been great avenues to market the event, but getting coverage in The Oregonian and AM 970 will help us reach those people not actively participating in the Portland online community.

Update: Here’s the audio of the show. Listen to his Raven and Rick Emerson discussing the Ignite format, highlights of the presentations we’re going to see at Ignite Portland 2, and how cool Portland is in general! Click to listen in the embedded player below, or click here to download the MP3 file directly (2.5MB, about 5.5 minutes).

Welcome, Oregonians!

The Oregonian this morning has an article about Ignite Portland 2 on the cover of the Living (C) section. Laura Oppenheimer is the author. There is also an online version of the article, posted at OregonLive.com - “What’s on your mind? You’ve got five minutes …,” although you will see from the photo that Scott Kveton took above, the print version is worth the trip to the store to buy a copy for $0.50. There are a few people whose names were not mentioned in The Oregonian article who have been a big help with Ignite Portland planning - Scott Kveton, Adam Duvander, Aaron Hockley, Ann Marcus, the rest of the board of Legion of Tech, Renny Gleeson, and a whole host of volunteers who help from crowd control to cleanup and everything else that needs to be done to make Ignite Portland operate smoothly. Thank you!

If you’re just finding out about Ignite Portland 2 from the article in The Oregonian - WELCOME! The event is open to all. Here’s some quick information about the event - we hope to see you there!

* Ignite Portland 2 takes place Tuesday, February 5th, from 6-9pm at the Bagdad Theatrer on 3702 S.E. Hawthorne Blvd. We have posted directions to the venue.

* Doors open at 5:15pm and admission is always FREE. We are recommending that you get there early as there is always a possibility that we hit the fire code limit again this time. For the first Ignite Portland event, we hit fire code at 297 people over at the beautiful Wieden+Kennedy space in NE Portland. We had to move the venue this time to accommodate more people. The Bagdad will hold 580 sitting, and I think we can get around 700 total people in there.

* We are hoping to get an attendance count prior to the night of the event for planning purposes. If you have a few minutes, it would help us if you’d visit our page on Upcoming, and add yourself to the RSVP list. You do not have to RSVP to attend, but this process helps us in terms of event planning and logistics.

* Make sure you take a look at the agenda for the event. For Ignite Portland 2, we’ll have 14 speakers and an intro on ‘What is Ignite?’ for the newcomers. You can also check out videos from the first event to get a sense for how this all works.

* Ignite Portland will continue on a regular basis. We’ve already begun work on Ignite Portland 3, and will share details on the third event the night of February 5th at Ignite Portland 2.

* If you’re inspired to submit a presentation idea for the next Ignite Portland, please be patient for a few more weeks until we get the submission form back online for the next event. We look forward to your submission!

* This event is supported by our wonderful sponsors - you can check out the list on the right sidebar of this site. Thank you, sponsors!

We look forward to seeing you at Ignite Portland 2!
